Wichita Thunder – The Road to the CHL Finals

Submitted by: Jason Mals, Director of Broadcasting – Wichita Thunder Hockey

Onto the CHL Finals!!! With Matt Robinson’s overtime winner, the guys finished the deal on Monday night and now it’s time to prepare for the CHL Finals for the first time since 1997-98. So many words can be used to describe the emotions that the team was feeling afterwards. In speaking to Adam Russo, he said he was so excited about the win that when he was skating across the ice to get over to the team he couldn’t keep his balance and fell down in front of the pile of screaming players. The guys pulled out their second-straight OT win and now, there is just one more step to climb in the Finals.

The one player you have to be happy for is Matt Robinson, who scored the game-winner. The teams leading goal scorer during the regular season was bottled up against Rio Grande Valley and finally found some open ice as he got around a defender, put a shot onto the Texas net minder and put home his own rebound. Maybe he can use this as a springboard into the finals, but he called the goal the single biggest goal of his career to-date. He was acquired from Laredo a year ago and came back to help this team get to its fourth final in franchise history.

The team had the day off yesterday and had a light skate today to make sure they didn’t lose their edge. The opponent has not been decided yet as the Fort Wayne Komets won last night over Missouri, 4-1 in Game 6 and forced a Game 7 tomorrow night in Fort Wayne. I know the guys really do not care about who they play, but the fans have been pretty mixed about it. Some want the team to play Missouri to get some revenge for getting knocked out of the playoffs last year and others want Fort Wayne just so the Mavericks do not have a chance to win the Cup. Either way, this is going to be a tough opponent and I expect the team to be dialed in come Saturday night.

I will have more as the week moves along. Tickets are on sale now, but if you want a group discount, just give the office a call and ask for me. There is no reason why we shouldn’t have the lower bowl filled with everyone wearing blue and being as loud as possible. Join the Blue Revolution!
