Wichita Thunder – CHL Finals Update from the Road May 1
Submitted by: Jason Mals, Director of Broadcasting – Wichita Thunder Hockey
It’s time to hit the road again! After putting this last weekend behind us, the team jumped on the bus for the final road trip of the season with a lot at stake. This is a proud group with a ton of veteran leadership. As I have said in previous entries, they do not like to lose. Guys like Daniel Tetrault, Travis Wight, and Aaron Davis have been around a long time and with so much riding on these next few games, I have all the confidence in the world that they will find a way to get it done.
We loaded the bus and hit road around 7 p.m. This trip is a long one, with Fort Wayne being over 800 miles away. Shane from KAKE Channel 10 joined us again on this one as he has been chronicling the teams road through the playoffs and a behind-the-scenes look at life as a minor league hockey player. If you have not seen the entry he did this past weekend, I highly recommend you check it out. Just go onto the Wichita Thunder facebook page and click on the video that says Wichita Thunder All Access. I was very impressed with the production, the music, and the story telling that is portrayed in the piece.
We will get into Fort Wayne sometime around 9 or 10 in the morning. The guys will hit up a breakfast joint and then we will head over the arena for a skate. This building is very unique. Fort Wayne plays in one of the oldest venues in the league and you can tell when you walk through the doors. The benches are not on the same sides of the ice. The corners seem wider and they have more advertising on their ice surface than a NASCAR has on its hood. The broadcast booth is all the way at the top of the arena. In fact, Bob Chase, who is the voice of the Komets, will be calling his 100th all-time playoff game this coming Thursday.
I will have more in the morning as the guys prepare for a huge Game 3. The guys are trailing 2-0 in the CHL Finals but there is no quit in this team and the theme I have heard from the fans is get this series back to Wichita! They will have their first attempt at that in two days.
